Singapore Tour: Nature & Photography Opportunities

by Linda Kelly

A 5-day Singapore Tour
with Emphasis on Nature, Wildlife and Photography Opportunities.

We arrive 26th Oct for 5 days leaving on 31st for Perth. I would like to see as much wildlife as possible (particularly snakes and spiders). And my partner is an aviation fan.

We are staying near Clarke Quay. Please could you give me a highlights itinerary with lots of photography opportunities.

We are not interested in sport, Universal Studios or anything involving kids, though I would like to go to Sentosa.

Hi Linda

If you'd like your Singapore tour to be full of wildlife and photography opportunities, you could try something like this:

Day 1 - Lower Pierce Trail & Singapore Night Safari

After checking into your hotel, take a taxi to check out the Lower Peirce Trail. In the late afternoon, lots of the wildlife come out looking for food - squirrels, macaques, even a few snakes if you are lucky.

Then catch dinner nearby, such as along Upper Thomson Road, and head for a night with the animals at Singapore Night Safari.

Day 2 - A Day at Pulau Ubin (Rustic Island)

i) MRT to Tanah Merah MRT Station,
ii) followed by Bus No. 2 to Changi Village, and
iii) bumboat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal to Ubin Island.

Important: Find out when the last bumboat leaves Ubin for Changi Point! Check with the bumboat operators.

Pulau Ubin is a rustic island - a sort of throwback to Singapore in the 1970s. You'll find some quaint village homes, biking trails, and wildlife photo opportunities.

Upon arrival at the island, head to the Pulau Ubin Visitors' Centre for a free island map - ask the person on duty for recommendations and updates about sights on the island.

You could rent a bike and check out Ubin Butterfly Hill, Chek Jawa Coastal Reserve, as well as the waters of dis-used granite quarries (birds galore!).

Binoculars, a macro lens and a good telephoto lens would serve you well.

Many of the 40+ oriental pied hornbills live on Pulau Ubin. You'll find spiders, monitor lizards, changeable lizards, jungle fowls in the more secluded parts of the island.

There are also lots of wildlife among the mangroves, especially near the prawn farms - mangrove crabs, mud skippers, and the like.

Lunch could be had near the jetty, or at one of the seafood restaurants there.

Round up the day with a seafood dinner back at Changi Village.

Day 3 - Singapore Farm Tour @ Kranji Countryside

The highlight on this Singapore farm tour is the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. Lots of birds - local and migratory - have been spotted. You may also chance upon water monitor lizards, otters, and if you are very lucky, estuarine crocodiles.

Allow at least half a day at the Kranji Countryside.

Day 4 - Little India & Kampong Glam

Photo opportunities galore at Little India Singapore and Kampong Glam.

Day 5 - A Day on Sentosa Island

Don't worry. This is life on Sentosa Island beyond Universal Studios. Check out the Butterfly and Insect Kingdom and Sentosa Nature Discovery Trail on the Sentosa Island itinerary.

Have an enjoyable Singapore tour - there's surely no shortage of wildlife and nature photography opportunities.
