Shop Recommendations for LCD TVs & DVD Players
by: Gabriel Tan

Hi there

Where to buy LCD TVs and DVD Players in Singapore

you can check out these electronic goods stores:

1. Gain City
- Main showroom: Marina Square Shopping Centre
- near City Hall MRT Station

2. Audio House
- Main showroom: Liang Court Shopping Centre
- On River Valley Rd, near Clarke Quay MRT Station

You'll probably get good deals elsewhere as well. However, some of the lesser known shops may try to mark up prices on you.

First, try to do some research online and at home. Come up with a list of models and prices. Then when you come here, you can zoom in on what you want.

If you don't know what you want when you walk into the shop, the salespeople may try to recommend something you do not need.

Things to check before you buy:

1. Check whether the shop is under the Tourist Tax Refund Scheme. That might save you a bit of money.

2. Check that the voltage of the electronic goods you buy in Singapore is suitable for use in India.

3. Make sure it comes with an International Warranty, including for use in India.

Do I have to do any formalities or pay customs?

You obviously cannot hand-carry these electronic items onto the plane's cabin - the DVD player may get through if it's very small; the 40 inch LCD TV won't get through.

The combined weight of your LCD TV and DVD Player will likely exceed the check-in baggage allowance - usually 20kg for economy class passengers + size restriction.

So you must find a reliable way to get it back to India, probably through some sort of shipping arrangement, either through the shop you buy from or through your own arrangement.

The other thing relates to taxes when you get back to India. Will they impose taxes on you? This I don't know. You need to check this on the India side.

There are no taxes in Singapore for taking electronics out of Singapore for personal consumption. Taxes are only imposed if you take them in for sale, or for personal consumption under certain conditions.
