Chinatown in Johor Malaysia?

Is there a Chinatown in Johor similar to the one in Kuala Lumpur? And how far is it from the the border with Singapore?

No Big Scale Chinatown in Johor but...
by: Gabriel Tan

Hi there

there isn't a Chinatown in Johor that is of the same size as Kuala Lumpur Chinatown. Not even a shopping street like the night market on Jalan Petaling in Kuala Lumpur.

However, here are a few spots in Johor that may remind you of KL Chinatown:

1. Night Market near the junction of Jalan Wong Ah Fook and Jalan Ungku Puan

It is near a Hindu temple. There are quite a few hawker stalls here, so you may want give 'Malaysian street food' a try.

This night market is just across the Causeway. You can visit it when you shop at Johor Bahru city centre. There are also a few shopping centres around here. The most prominent one is called City Square.

2. Taman Sri Tebrau Hawker Centre

This food centre is found in a neighbourhood called Taman Tebrau Jaya and located on Jalan Keris. It has some of the most delicious food in Johor Bahru.

After clearing the customs, you'll need to drive up the Tebrau Highway (Highway 3). About 6-8km up the road, look out for a hotel called Hotel Crystal Crown. The hawker centre is just on the opposite side of the road (Tebrau Highway).

Around the Taman Sri Tebrau Hawker Centre are 2 interesting neighbourhoods - Taman Tebrau Jaya and Taman Sentosa.

There are some shops here selling distinctly Chinese stuff - pastries (e.g. tau sa pia), dried food stuff, fruits, durians (when in season), etc. I like browsing around here. You may like it, or you may not.
