Week Long Singapore Tour with Malaysia Day Trip
by Jayson Chun
(Manila, Philippines)
| Hi, I'm Jayson from the Philippines. Me, my wife and in-laws will be in Singapore from August 15 to 21, 2010. We are first time Singapore travellers. As of now we have no idea where to stay. A friend suggested Ibis Hotel Bencoolen. Is it ok? We want to maximize our stay in Singapore. We would love it if you could squeeze in a Malaysia day tour for us. We would really appreciate your help. I'm a BMW car accessories enthusiast while my father in-law is into electronics and gadgets. Hope to hear from you soon. |
Hi Jayson
SINGAPORE HOTEL OPTIONS
1) Hotel Ibis on Bencoolen is a safe bet - it's part of a hotel chain that prices itself just above the budget range. The outlet in Singapore is relatively new and is located in a quite a convenient location.
2 nearby hotels worth considering are:
a) Rendezvous Hotel Singapore
- slightly more luxurious than Ibis
- down the same road as Ibis Bencoolen
b) Victoria Hotel Singapore
- budget rated, slightly more affordable
- great location
SHOPPING FOR CAR ACCESSORIES AND ELECTRONIC GADGETS IN SINGAPORE
1) Car Parts. Here's a thread about buying car accessories in Singapore - with links to vendors of car accessories. You could contact them in advance to see if they have the BMW parts you're looking for.
2) Electronics Goods. For computers, cameras, TVs and such, you could head down to either Funan IT Mall (nearest MRT: City Hall) or Sim Lim Square. There've been a few complaints about some shops in Sim Lim Square recently. So do some advanced research and know the market price of items you plan to buy - this will help you decide whether you are getting a good deal.
SUGGESTED 7-DAY SINGAPORE TOUR PLAN
Day 1 - Arrival & Shopping
After checking into your hotel, check out the eateries and shopping around your hotel. If you are staying at Ibis on Bencoolen Hotel, you could check out Bugis Junction or Little India.
Day 2 - City Highlights & Animal Parks
Follow this Singapore tour itinerary:
Take the Duck Tour to get an overview of the sights in Singapore city. Follow this up with a trip to the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari.
Day 3 - Singapore River & City Shopping
Morning & Afternoon: Shop for car accessories and electronics.
Late Afternoon & Evening: Check out the sights on the Singapore River.
Day 4 - Johor Malaysia Day Tour
Rent a car and do a self drive tour Desaru-Kota Tinggi in Johor.
Note about driving in Malaysia:
A tourist may drive in Malaysia with a valid driving license from his/her own home country.
Day 5 - Chinatown Food and Shopping Tour
People's Park Complex and Food Centre
Take the MRT to Chinatown Station. Take the exit leading to People's Park Complex and Food Centre.
Check out the delicious local food at the Food Centre, and then proceed to Level 2 of the same complex, where you'll find some pretty interesting shops selling clothes, bags, and the like.
Check out these malls around Chinatown MRT Station as well: OG Chinatown, People's Park Complex.
Souvenir Hunting @ Pagoda Street, Temple Street and Sago Street
Some of the souvenirs here are tacky and not worth your time. But some are pretty interesting, if not for shopping, then at least for browsing.
Interesting Shops at Ann Siang Road and Club Street
Sometimes missed by tourists, this area across South Bridge Road is home of many hidden gems: shops with unique stuff and a handful of good cafes, restaurants and pubs. A very worthwhile stop if you are in Chinatown.
Day 6 - Linger in Little India
Check out the temples, side streets, and bargain shops in Little India. Culminate with dinner at Tekka Food Centre (near Little India MRT Station) - lots of cheap and good Indian food.
If you are lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of Mani the Psychic Parakeet here, who made many correct predictions during Fifa World Cup 2010.
Have an enjoyable Singapore tour.
Gabriel Tan
