Using Foreign Currencies at Singapore Airport

by Kath
(Australia)

We will be in transit in Singapore on our way to the UK. We would like to know if the duty free and other stores (eg coffee shops) accept payment in Australian dollars. We do not have credit cards. An early reply would be appreciated.

Major Foreign Currencies Accepted But...
by: Gabriel Tan

Hi Kath

Yes, the Australian dollar is accepted at the duty-free shops at Singapore Airport, as well as most F&B outlets.

However, be prepared for highly unfavourable rates.

One way to get around this is to browse the shops first and estimate the amount you need in Singapore dollars.

Then hop over to one of the money exchange counters near the duty-free shops, buy the amount of Singapore dollars you need, and head back to the shops to buy.

If this is too much of a hassle, just pay in Australian dollars. But I'm a scrimper, so this (some say ludicrous) money saving idea ;-).
