Turned Down By Singapore Duty Free Shop

I was back from Malaysia yesterday after my 3 days business trip.

I am 100% Singaporean.

I was turned down by the Duty Free Shop staff - I can't purchase the liquor simply because I came back from Malaysia. What is the reason behind this?

No Duty-free Allowance for Passengers Returning from Malaysia

This is quite a curious policy. Yes, it's the official policy of the the Singapore Customs: passengers returning from Malaysia are not given any duty-free allowance for alcoholic drinks.

I can only make a guess regarding the reason:

Perhaps there are just be too many people making daily/weekly trips between Singapore and Malaysia?

And allowing them to buy duty-free might just cancel out - or reduce - the effect of having duties in the first place?

[I believe that duties on alcoholic drinks are imposed to curb their consumption in Singapore.]

If anyone has the actual reason, please let us know.

Duty Free Liquor

i guess its excatly the same reason which u can only buy liquor if u r coming back from batam - old rule is minimum 48 hours, not sure if still the same. probably just about too much traffic n lost of revenues....if too many day trips to china maybe they will curb that too. :D

Wat is the policy...???

I just got turned down by the DFS after arriving back from a 11 day trip to Sabah. There seems to be a blanket ban on duty free liquor for passengers arriving from Malaysia regardless of how long you're away.

Am curious wat is the exact policy...??? That link points to GST relief...

Same to me declined

I was back from Langkawi after a getaway trip of 3 days and I was declined at the DFS. They say that it's a rule under which all Singaporeans who come back from Malaysia CANNOT purchase any duty free liquor. She even advise me to just take a look. What is wrong?
