I heard there are taxes levied on branded handbags purchased overseas when I bring them back to Singapore. If that is truly the case, then how much? Thanks.

GST Relief on S$300 Purchase Only

Hi there

If you

a) are at least 18 years old,

b) have been outside Singapore for at least 48 hours, and

c) are not taking the goods into Singapore to sell or give away,

you are entitled to S$300 GST relief.

What does this mean?

If you are returning to Singapore and the total value of your newly bought goods is equal to or less than S$300, you don't have to pay GST on these goods.

If the total value of newly bought goods exceeds S$300, you need to declare them at the red channel and pay GST on the goods above S$300 value.

As far as I understand from the Singapore Customs website, there are no duties for taking handbags through the customs.

(Note: duties are different from taxes.)
