GST Allowance for New Items
by: Gabriel Tan

Hi Pooh

According to this Singapore Customs webpage on GST Relief, a tourist to Singapore who is:

1. above 18 years old, and
2. has been outside of Singapore for over 48 hours,

is entitled to $300 GST relief.

--------------------------------
The following section has been updated on 13 June 09 to correct some errors in the original post.
--------------------------------

In the unlikely event that the computer costs less than S$300, your Dad need not pay any GST.

In the more likely event that the computer costs over S$300, your Dad will have to declare the item at the red lane ('Items to Declare') and pay GST.

He needs to produce the receipt for the computer when the customs officers asks to see it.
