Sultan Mosque's History and Architecture in Brief
by: Gabriel Tan

What is the history of Sultan Mosque?

The original Sultan Mosque was built between 1824 and 1826. A certain Sultan Hussein commissioned the building. So, it's easy to guess why it is called Sultan Mosque.

The original building was a 3-tier brick structure, with a roof shaped like a pagoda.

The Muslim population in Singapore increased tremendously in the early 1900s, and the mosque became too small. By 1924, the old structure had become a tad too worn-out. A new mosque was needed.

What is the architecture of Sultan Mosque?

The present Sultan Mosque was built between 1925 and 1928 in what is called the Islamic Saracenic style. In other words, you'll find a lot of domes, minarets and balustrades.

Did you know that there is a little graveyard at the back of the mosque? A few descendants of Sultan Hussein were buried here.

Some interesting facts and photos of the Sultan Mosque...
