I wanted to know whether gold jewellery shopping is more expensive than in India. Is it duty free?

Shopping for Gold Jewellery & Tax Refund in Singapore

Hi Smita

I've never been to India, so I can't help you compare prices of gold jewellery in Singapore versus India.

However, if you shop for gold jewellery in Singapore, you could check if the shop participate in the GST Refund Scheme.

Look out for signs at the shops that say 'Global Refund' or 'Premier Tax Free'. Some shops administer their own GST Refund Scheme and will indicate this at their shop as well.

There are many gold jewellery shops in Singapore's Little India. They are mostly located on Serangoon Road, near the Little India MRT Station.

Another popular place to shop for gold jewellery in Singapore is Mustafa Centre, also located in Litttle India near the Farrer Park MRT Station.

Mustafa Centre offers a great variety of gold jewellery. It also runs its own GST Refund Scheme. You could get your tax refund documents processed at Mustafa's basement level.

Other popular jewellery shops in Singapore include Lee Hwa, Goldheart, and Soo Kee. These are retail chains and they have branches all over Singapore.

You can get an idea of the gold price in Little India area at the website http://www.mustafa.com.sg/index.asp

The price vary from shop to shop in a narrow margin about one SGD per gram.

For tourists, the gold purchase is tax free. You will pay the tax and get that back on leaving Singapore with the purchased jewellery, by following GST refund requirements.

It is cheaper than Malaysia. It is also cheaper when compared to India, if you consider the charges for wastage & making charges in India. The gap used to be very wide; but now it has reduced significantly after liberalisation in India.

Current price is about SGD 49,50 per gram. Some of the machine made chains can be purchased at no additional cost.
