Prices of Branded Digital Cameras in Singapore

I will be visiting Singapore this weekend. I want to know whether branded digital cameras/handycams (Say Sony, Canon, etc.) are cheaper in Singapore compared to India?

Please suggest.

Tax Refund for Your Camera in Singapore

Hi Bish

As I've never been to India, I'm unable to do the comparison for you.

However, photographers generally believe that these 4 countries offer the best prices for cameras:

1. US
2. Hong Kong
3. Malaysia
4. Singapore

The major brands usually have some kind of price standardisation - when the prices in one country drop, the prices in other countries will drop by similar margins.

So the final price is affected mainly by the taxes and currency strength in a particular country.

One advantage of shopping in Singapore as compared to shopping in India:

If you are an Indian passport holder - that is, you are in Singapore as a tourist - you may get a refund for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) paid on your camera.

Look out for shops in Singapore that display the GST refund signs - 'Global Refund', 'Premier Tax Free', 'GST Refund Voucher'.

If you are a tourist in Singapore - especially if you are a first-time visitor or you have not lived in Singapore recently - you're likely to qualify for a refund on the GST.

GST refund may be claimed just before a visitor depart from the Singapore Airport.
