Orchard Road Christmas Light Up:

But the Orchard Road Christmas Light Up is especially interesting in the week leading up to Christmas Day. You'll get to see the Christmas floats on Orchard Road. Also, the churches are out in full force with a range of performances and charity events.
- What to wear? Light clothings. This is after all equatorial Singapore.
- Where are the freebies?
- Look out for the free balloons, et cetera which the churches hand out during the performances.
- Free performances by churches at various locations on Orchard Road. Carols. Mimes. Drama. Dances.
- Check out the free events for Christmas 2011
Important Caveat! Freebies are exactly what they are, free. It also means that sometimes you don't get them. Please don't write in to ask me why you are unable to get such-and-such an item for free, and at such-and-such a place. This being the season for giving, think not about where to get freebies, but about giving a gift!
- How about late night shopping and transport?
- The malls on Orchard Road take turns to open till late (= midnight) in the few weeks leading up to Christmas Day.
- On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, the Singapore MRT and SBS Transit normally extend operating hours. You could still catch the trains at 1am. Most of the Night Rider buses run till even later.
- How about fireworks? The fireworks go off on 31 Dec each year at midnight. The countdown draws many people to the Marina Bay area, where the fireworks are launched. [Fireworks tips]
- Where to stay? Orchard Road itself has many good hotels. These are near to the Light Up and major shopping spots. The ones listed here regularly receive good reviews. Note, however, you won't find budget hotels / hostels smack in the heart of Orchard Road.
