How to Maximize a 5 Days / 4 Nights Tour in Singapore?
by Jun Soria
(Philippines)
We are a big family (2 seniors 64 yrs old + 5 adults + 2 children 8 & 6 yrs old). How can we maximize our 5 day tour to Singapore? => What are the MUST SEE ATTRACTIONS? => Hotel (3/4 Star) location where it is accessible to shopping, food centers & transportation. => Is EZ-Link card practical for us to buy? => We notice there are so many "Hop-on Hop-off" being offered by Tour Agency's. Is there a Hop-on Hop-off company where I can go direct? I would like to prepare a tentative travel plan after I get the answers to the above questions. Thanks very much! Jun Soria |
Hi Jun
MUST-SEE PLACES IN SINGAPORE
If this is a first trip for your family, you could consider a mixture of interesting spots in Singapore:
1) The Animal Parks: Singapore Zoo, Night Safari & Jurong Bird Park
These are family-friendly places and each has tram rides if you want the seniors to do less walking.
2) A Trip to a Heartland Town
Many visitors to Singapore only drop by the main shopping districts and theme parks - and go back with an impression that Singapore is one big Disney-fied shopping mall. How sad.
I recommend you take a train out to one of the heartland towns - to shop and get a better sense of what Singaporeans are really like in their immediate neighbourhoods. It'll be quite interesting. Moreover, you'll find some very good bargains in the shops at the heartland town centres.
Consider visiting one of these town centres: Toa Payoh, Ang Mo Kio, or Tampines.
3) Food Sampling at a Heritage District
Try sampling Singapore food:
a) Indian food in Little India
b) Chinese food in Chinatown or Geylang
c) Malay food in Geylang Serai
d) Peranakan food in Joo Chiat / Katong
Of course, most of the main travel spots in Singapore also described on this website.
CONVENIENTLY LOCATED 3-STAR HOTELS IN SINGAPORE
A good centrally located family-friendly 3-star hotel is YWCA Fort Canning Lodge. It is a 5-minute walk to the Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station and close to the shopping in Orchard Road and the museums in the Bras Basah area.
Outside the main city area, you could consider these good-value 3-star hotels on Balestier Road Singapore.
Pay a bit more and you could stay in these 4-star hotels in Singapore city centre.
EZ-LINK CARD & HOP-ON HOP-OFF TICKETS
I feel that it's better to go to a place, stay a while and take your time to soak up the place. My mantra is 'Less is more!'.
As such, I feel that you're better off paying cash for train or bus rides, and stay a while at your destination. The EZ-LINK card and Hop-on Hop-off are good for visitors who are short of time and would like to see many places in one day - not the way I think you should travel.
Let me know if you have further questions.
