How Safe is the Road to Desaru

by Fanny
(Singapore)

We are planning to go to Desaru from Singapore for the first time. And we are travelling with kids. How safe is the road? And is it easy to find direction? We are planning to stay at Pulai Desaru.

The Road to Desaru is Safe
by: Gabriel Tan

Hi Fanny
I've driven to Desaru several times already and have never encountered any problems there. Beyond the JB city area, the roads are good, well-paved and uncongested - you do get a 'country road' feel along the way.

What's important is to make the correct turns during the early part of the drive.

After clearing JB Malaysian customs, you need to:

1. take the first exit just after the Shell petrol kiosk, and

2. take the right turn (not left) to get onto Jalan Tebrau.

[directions updated 21 Dec 2009]

Thereafter, the road signs are pretty clear and the chance of getting lost is minimal. Print out my Johor Tour itinerary. Or buy a good Johor map from Popular Bookstore - I recommend the WEM Johor State Map, which I use myself.

In the JB city area, precaution should be taken, as one would in any other city in the world.

Beyond JB, I've always found the folks at Kota Tinggi-Desaru friendly and helpful. They are not the type who're just concerned with doing business with you. And I've never had to pay so-called 'tourist prices' in these 2 areas.

If you feel that the children may get restless in the car, stand by some snacks and cut fruits. Or take some toys along if they are very young. I also like to stock up on bottled water when I do a self-drive.

Have a good trip.

I was wondering, if there are water sports in Desaru, Pulai Springs.
