I am stopping over in Singapore for 1 day and had bought some duty free cigarettes from Jakarta the day before and then travelling back to Australia.

Do I need to declare and pay duty on the cigarettes I bought in Jakarta when I clear customs in Singapore as the cigarettes are to be consumed back in Australia? Please advise.

2 Possible Scenarios

Hi Philip

There are 2 possible scenarios:

1. Arrival & Departure at Main Terminals

If you are arriving and departing from one of the main terminals, you could leave your cigarettes at the left luggage facility in the transit area and collect them on your flight out of Singapore.

For a short period of 24 hours or less, this will cost you a few dollars - but still cheaper than if you were to declare your cigarettes and pay duty/tax.

The transit areas of all the main terminals are connected and you could move from one to another using the Skytrain - even if you are arriving/departing from different terminals.

2. Arrival or Departure at Budget Terminal

If you are arriving or departing from the Singapore Budget Terminal, you have no choice but to declare your cigarettes and pay up.

The Budget Terminal is in a separate building from the main terminals. Its Arrival Hall is also separate from its Departure Hall. Therefore, the only way of taking your cigarettes out of Singapore is to first take it in through customs.
