Excess Checked In Luggage While Leaving Singapore

by Bharath

Hi,

I will be travelling from US to India and will be stopping over in Sinagpore for 2/3 days, on return I will be taking Singapore Airlines to India.

As we can carry 50 lbs + 50 lbs (2 bags) as check-in luggage from US, so while leaving from Singapore to India will I be charged for the luggage since I heard that Sinagore Airlines will allow only one check-in baggage of 30 Kgs.

Excess Luggage is Charged at Changi Airport

Hi Bharath

Had it been a normal transit flight, your airline would have transferred your luggage onto the India-bound flight.

However, as you are stopping over for 2-3 days, it's likely that your Singapore-India segment is considered a separate flight.

This is especially so if your flights are on different airlines; or if you've bought the tickets separately. (We can't tell from the information you provided.)

Hence, the smaller check-in luggage limit for the India-bound trip as you're starting your flight from Singapore.

For flights departing from Singapore, I understand that SIA allows the following limits for check-in baggage:

a. First class ticket: 40kg
b. Business class ticket: 30kg
c. Economy class ticket: 20kg

(as of 10 Dec 2008)

But they do allow additional check-in luggage to selected destinations for passengers holding a variety of 'Gold' flight memberships.

I advise that you contact SIA directly to verify what your check-in baggage entitlement is, for your flight departing from Singapore.
