Duty Free Alcohol: Melbourne - Kuala Lumpur - Singapore

I am traveling from Melbourne, Australia to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with Air Asia and then onto Singapore. I do not leave the airport. I will only be there in transit. Can I take my duty free alcohol I bought in Melbourne through to Singapore with no penalty?

Budget Airline Transit? It's Different

Hi Ray

In a transit stopover with a typical full-service airline,

1. your luggage is usually transferred onto your onward flight automatically, and

2. you are usually issued 2 boarding passes at initial check in.

This often means you do not need to leave the transit area of the stopover airport at all.

When you travel with a budget airline in Asia - at least for the present - no such convenience is accorded to you.

As far as I'm aware, when you reach KL LCCT, you'll need to clear immigration, collect your checked luggage if any, go through customs checks and re-check in for your flight to Singapore. In that sense, you are "leaving the airport" because you'll be entering Malaysia.

(You need to verify the above with Air Asia.)

Malaysia has its own system and set of rules governing duty-free items at their airports. I'm not sure how much duty-free alcohol you are allowed to take through. You need to check their customs website for details.

But you can roughly assume that if you incur duty/tax for your alcoholic drinks at KL LCCT because you exceed their limits, you're likely to face duty/tax also at Singapore Airport.
