Cigarette Issues If Transit in Singapore

Hi,
I am travelling from Hong Kong to Australia on a Jetstar flight via Singapore.

As I have about 6 hours in singapore, I have decided to meet one of my friends to have dinner.

If I buy cigarettes from HK airport for intention to take to Australia, will I have to pay duties when I arrive in Singapore? As i would need to clear customs with my lugguage (i presume).

Thanks

Keeping Your Cigarettes for Australia
by: Gabriel Tan

Hi there

If you leave your cigarettes with the left luggage facility within the restricted Transit/Departure Area, you could collect it after you've re-checked in for your onward flight to Australia.

The left luggage fee for small items starts at S$3.15.

(It'll be hard for you convince customs - when you're carrying a carton of cigarettes into Singapore - that it is meant for Australia.)

Buy them at Singapore Airport

Why don't you just buy them in Singapore Airport as they are just as cheap in the Duty Free shops.

In Australia you will pay three to four times the amount that you will pay at the Airport.

Bingo!

Hi there

that's a great idea!

Yups, you could buy your cigarettes duty-free on the way out of Singapore Airport, unless you're looking at an unusual brand which is only available at HK airport. But the common brands are available at Singapore Airport.

You can buy a carton of 200 sticks duty-free.
