Chinese New Year in Singapore:
Visiting Sentosa and Other Attractions

My husband is coming for the Chinese New Year and we plan to go to Sentosa to watch Songs of the Sea, ride the Luge and Sky Ride and visit Underwater World.

Is it open during New Year's Eve, Feb 13, 2010? Or would it be ok on Feb 14? I read in the net that on Feb 13, it is best to go to Chinatown. He will be going back to Manila on the night of Feb 15. Hope you can help me on this?

The Sentosa attractions you mentioned are open everyday of the year. So you'll have no problem visiting them on Chinese New Year's Eve.

But you might want to save your Sentosa visit for Chinese New Year's Day (14/2).

It's better to head down to Chinatown during Chinese New Year's Eve. You'll find a vibrant street market, stage performances, and the Countdown Concert which culminates with fireworks at midnight.

Be warned, though, that the streets will be 'empty' from 5pm to 7pm, when everyone retreats somewhere for the reunion dinner. Thereafter, everything bursts into life. While it is very vibrant, it's also very crowded.

An alternative plan for Chinese New Year's Eve

Spend the early part of the evening at Clarke Quay. For the first time this year, there'll be a street performance there - calligraphers, acrobats and stilt-walkers will entertain at Read Bridge. There'll also be fireworks at 9.30pm.

Thereafter, take a leisurely walk by the Singapore River all the way to The Float @ Marina Bay, where the River Hong Bao Carnival will be at its peak. Join the folks there for the Countdown - and more fireworks are launched at midnight.
